Micronesia/The Federated States of MicronesiaThe Federated States of Micronesia is an independent, sovereign island nation, made up of four states from west to east: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. It comprises approximately 607 small islands in the Western Pacific spread over almost 1700 miles (2700 km) longitudinally just north of the equator some 2500 miles (4000 km) southwest of the main islands of Hawaii and about 1800 miles (2900 km) north of eastern Australia, lying northeast of New Guinea, south of Guam and the Marianas, west of Nauru and the Marshalls, and east of Palau and the Philippines. While the FSM's total land area is quite small, amounting to approximately 270 square miles (700 km2), it occupies more than 1000000 square miles (2600000 km2) of the Pacific Ocean. The capital is Palikir, the largest city Kolonia, both on Pohnpei. Each of its four States is centered around one or more main high islands, and all but Kosrae include numerous outlying atolls. The Federated States of Micronesia is spread across part of the Caroline Islands in the wider region of Micronesia, which consists of thousands of small islands divided between several countries. The term Micronesia may refer to the Federated States or to the region as a whole. ♫ Federated States of Micronesia National Anthem ♫Patriots of Micronesia, also known as Across all Micronesia, is the national anthem of the Federated States of Micronesia. It was adopted in 1991, replacing Preamble, the anthem in use since independence in 1979. The melody is that of the German student song "Ich hab' mich ergeben" (which was also one of the unofficial anthems of West Germany between 1949 and 1952) and uses the melody of the German student song "Wir hatten gebauet ein stattliches Haus" (We had built a stately house) from 1819. The lyrics are also loosely based on a translation of "Ich hab' mich ergeben". Johannes Brahms uses the tune in his Academic Festival Overture from 1880. The Miskito people of Nicaragua have also adopted it for their national anthem. | |||
