Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Sakhone Chaleunvong has recalled and highlighted long traditional history of Lao Army since 20 January 1949 until now. The growth of achievements, over the past 63 years contributed to the national revolution cause and construction leading to the victory in 1954 over French and America imperialists on 2 December 1975. This lecture was aimed at providing understanding to the staff of the Ministry of Science and Technology on background of fighting and construction of the Lao Army and growth of the Lao Army over the past 63 years. | |||

Yes, there are many babies and children in Laos and they are very lovely. They are not afraid of strangers and always smile. But I am sorry to find that some children beg from tourists. I feel that the best way to help them is not to give them candies and money, but to help them to improve their economy. | |||

But can it really pull the nation out of poverty, and at what cost? Until recently the 'Amazon of Asia', was one of the world's last untouched rivers, but plans for a series of 55 dams in Laos look set to change that. With the majority of the population of Laos living below the poverty line, the government claims that hydropower is the quickest way to raise living standards, anticipating revenue of $80 million a year. Yet as scores of villages are uprooted to make way for the development, traditional subsistence communities are struggling. "We used to rely on nature for our living. Now if we don't buy, we can't eat", complains villager Cham Pha. The new dams also pose a threat to the ecosystem, endangering several species. Weighing up potential development and damage, the Lao people face a tough dilemma: "I'm worried about the environment but I want our village to have electricity".
